Our Approach

From Experience to Practice:
Equine-Assisted Learning in Action

Real-world experiences. Meaningful insights. Practical tools.

Where It All Began

Long before Strides to Excellence, this work began in Southern California through a program called Horses Heal.

It was there that we spent years facilitating equine-assisted learning experiences for individuals and groups navigating challenges such as communication, confidence, and addiction recovery.

These were not riding or training sessions, but guided, ground-based interactions designed to help people become more aware of how they think, feel, and respond in the moment.

Time and time again, we saw something powerful:

Horses respond to what’s real.

They don’t react to titles or carefully chosen words. They respond to energy, intention, and clarity—offering immediate, honest feedback that’s difficult to replicate in a traditional setting.

What Makes This Work So Powerful

Equine-assisted learning creates space for insight that goes beyond conversation.

  • Unclear communication becomes visible
  • Leadership challenges show up in real time
  • Emotional responses surface naturally
  • Moments of awareness lead to lasting change

Many of the most meaningful breakthroughs weren’t dramatic—they were quiet realizations. A shift in perspective. A deeper understanding of oneself or others.

These are the moments that stay with people long after they leave the arena.

From Horses Heal to Strides to Excellence

When we later developed Strides to Excellence, these same principles and experiences continued to shape the program.

Although the setting and structure evolved, the foundation remained the same: creating meaningful, experience-based opportunities for growth through guided interaction with horses.

The lessons learned through Horses Heal didn’t stay in the past—they became the groundwork for everything that followed.

Bringing the Experience Beyond the Arena

After years of hands-on work through Horses Heal, we wanted a way to capture the exercises, insights, and learning experiences in a format that could be used beyond the arena.

That led to the creation of our workbook:

Hoofbeats to Recovery

Now released as an expanded second edition (2026), this workbook reflects years of real-world application, refinement, and continued insight.

It is designed to guide facilitators through structured, experience-based activities that support reflection, discussion, and personal growth—whether used alongside horses or as a stand-alone resource.

Who This Resource Is For

This workbook was created with professionals and facilitators in mind, including:

  • Equine-assisted learning and therapy practitioners
  • Counselors and recovery program facilitators
  • Coaches and group leaders
  • Educators and experiential learning professionals

It’s especially valuable for those who want practical, guided exercises that encourage insight, participation, and meaningful conversation.

Rooted in Real Experience

This is not a theoretical approach or a collection of ideas gathered from research alone.

Each activity is grounded in real sessions conducted through Horses Heal, refined over time, and carried forward into the philosophy behind Strides to Excellence.

The workbook reflects a simple but powerful approach:

  • Meet people where they are
  • Create space for awareness
  • Allow experience to be the teacher

A Resource That Continues the Work

While direct program offerings may evolve over time, the need for meaningful, experience-based learning remains.

Hoofbeats to Recovery serves as a bridge—bringing the lessons and activities developed through years of hands-on work into a format that others can use within their own programs, practice, or facilitation work.

It also provides a foundation that continues to guide the philosophy behind Strides to Excellence.
